Outdoor patio rugs? Are those really a thing?
Yes, they are! 😄
But are they necessary?
Definitely not! But they sure do look fantastic! And if you can find a good deal, even better!
Since writing my post on budget-friendly patio updates, I've been thinking a lot about revamping my own outdoor space.
I love the idea of using outdoor patio rugs – I’ve never had one outside before, but it makes perfect sense!
Indoors, rugs anchor your furniture and tie your decor together; outdoors, they do the same thing!
So, I started browsing for outdoor rugs. Unable to pick just one, I decided to share all my favorite finds with you!
All the rugs I selected are reasonably priced, though prices do increase with size. They are also all weather-resistant, which is essential if you live in an area with summer rain.
And being weather-resistant means they also protect against harsh heat and sunlight.

What’s The Best Type Of Outdoor Rug?
Outdoor rugs are generally made of long-lasting materials that will hold up to all types of weather. They will also resist stains and fading.
Essentially there are two types of rugs, and both can be used outside:
- Synthetic
- Natural
1. Synthetic Rugs
Synthetic rugs are usually made in Polypropylene (olefin), Polyester, Nylon or Acrylic (plastic).
Olefin looks like sisal but is much more affordable. It's one of the most popular materials for outdoor rugs due to its durability, appealing texture, and weather-resistant properties. Interestingly, it's also used in wallpaper.
Synthetic outdoor rugs are completely water-resistant, lightweight, and quick-drying. Cleaning them is easy – just hose them down and let them dry outside.
2. Natural Fiber Rugs
Natural fiber rugs, made from materials like sisal, seagrass, and bamboo, offer a lovely texture and durability but can be damaged by excessive water.
They can also develop mildew, which is less than ideal.
Consider using natural fiber rugs on your patio if you don't get much rain or have a covered deck to protect them from heavy downpours.
Don’t Have A Big Patio Space? No Worries!
If you live in a condo or small apartment and only have a narrow balcony, do not despair!
You can still partake in the wonders of outdoor patio rugs!
Try using an outdoor runner that runs along the length of your balcony. As always, make sure you measure before ordering.
Accessorize your balcony with potted plants, a couple of chairs and a small table.

Should You Get an Outdoor Rug?
Adding an outdoor rug to your deck or patio brings an extra layer of interest and aesthetic appeal, enhancing your enjoyment of the space.
Outdoor rugs also allow you to extend your interior decor style to the exterior of your home.
If you haven't set up a comfortable area to enjoy your garden or patio, you're missing out! You should be able to spend as much time outside as you do inside when the weather is nice.
Maximize the value of your home by enjoying all your available space! Why not make it beautiful? It doesn't have to be expensive 🙂
